Purpose and Principles of Legacy Collection
The Legacy Collection serves to symbolize the transformation of South African’s broken and painful past into the hope of a better tomorrow for South Africa. The iconic handmade pieces are tokens of justice, equality, forgiveness and freedom which ring true to the principles of Legacy Collection.
Growing up in South Africa, Charmain Taylor witnessed the cruelty of the apartheid system and saw the transformation the country went through following the release of Nelson Mandela.
Today, South Africa continues to grow in democracy and strive for equality in undoing the injustices of apartheid. Each piece in the Legacy Collection is named in honour of this journey.
Taylor, with Nadia Thaele, birthed ‘The Legacy Exhibition’, which was created as a collaborative exhibition for the purpose of inspiring hope on Mandela’s 101st birthday. T
aylor and Thaele partnered with South African artist, Themba Mkhangeli, 24, whose work speaks of the struggles many South Africans are still faced with today. The exhibition combined artworks stories of Robben Island, Mandela and the freedom fighters.
The Legacy Exhibition echoed the principles of the Legacy Collection. The common thread in the exhibits is the original fence that surrounded the maximum security prison compound on Robben Island, which have been incorporated into the canvas artworks and inspirational portraits, much like the jewelry in the Legacy Collection.
Both the Legacy Collection and the Legacy Exhibition serve the purpose of commemorating the struggle and equality South Africa continues to strive for.
