People waiting for hours to cast their first vote in South Africa’s first free and fair democratic elections for all its people.

After nearly 300 years people of colour get to vote in South Africa, thousands lined up to cast their vote and changed the country for good.

"I don't want the whites to go away," said 80-year-old Christina Vanqa, a black woman, recently retired as a maid, who happily lined up at 5 A.M. to cast the first national ballot.

"We want to stay with them and build South Africa together."

"Today is a day like no other before it," declared Nelson Mandela, who was elected as the first president of the reforming nation, making it four years after he was freed from 27 years of apartheid imprisonment.

"Voting in our first free and fair election has begun. Today marks the dawn of our freedom."

“There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere.” ~ Nelson Mandela
