The much celebrated ‘Madiba shuffle’: Mandela dances to Thandi Klaasen’s tune at his 72nd birthday party at Kippies in Johannesburg.

In 1990, Nelson Mandela celebrated his 72nd birthday. This was the first birthday to be celebrated as a free man after his release from prison.

It was a momentous occasion that Madiba celebrated at various events, including a party at his home in Soweto and an event at Kippies in Johannesburg.

Here Mandela celebrated his birthday among colleagues and friends.

At this event, Madiba danced to the tune of Thandi Klaasen, a jazz musician from Sophiatown, and a jubilant Mandela does the iconic ‘Mandela Shuffle’ - a dance move that entails “forming a double fist and raising both arms in a curved position, slightly shaking the body, and moving the legs around the knees.”

"There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living." ~ Nelson Mandela
