Open Africa Routes
Safe Social Distancing Routes

Everyone loves a good road trip – and with a country as beautiful as South Africa, it’s easy to see why. Taking to the road is ingrained in South African culture and what better way to plan your safe social distancing route than to have a basket of attractions that you can choose from.

South African safe social distancing routes provide a great platform for exploration, often allowing you to take the byways and not the highways, to find the lesser-known gems of the country and enjoy the wide open spaces.

Here there are no theatres, shopping malls or traffic jams, just streams, valleys, hills and rocks. Pick your spot anywhere in the Lowveld, Drakensberg, Karoo or Kalahari, There is something for everyone.

Adventurist at heart? Go and play in the surf at Jeffreys Bay, take on the whitewash of the Orange River, or play with Great Whites in the Indian Ocean. Feel like taking it easy? Take in the sunset over the Karoo, watch a herd of buffalo escape the heat at a waterhole in Kruger Park, or just take a stroll along the Wild Coast.
Some say that one day in the African bush can change your life forever. Think what two days could do. Follow one of these South African tourism routes and see where the road leads you...

Do Travel Differently

Open Africa envisions a different world where authentic and unexpected experiences for travellers translate into opportunities for rural people.

A social enterprise that works with small businesses to establish rural tourism routes, Open Africa offers travellers authentic experiences while generating income and jobs for local people.
Travelling with Open Africa is different. Your travel is organised according to routes that cater to diverse interests, where you choose your own experiences. You will explore off-the-beaten-track places that deliver the unexpected, meet real people and have local experiences that support local businesses and livelihoods while you travel.

What if taking a break, going away, wasn’t a luxury?  What if it was easy and affordable to have fun? Experiencing the world in new ways excites and revitalises people, and at Open Africa we know it is possible for everyone.

These safe social distancing routes were all carefully crafted with local communities to offer you memorable experiences that reveal the people and stories that make our country special, and we have visited every single one. We know the hosts. We have tasted the homemade bread, and tried out the zip line.

Whether you are an adventure seeker looking for exciting and different places to go, or a family looking for a special place for a gathering, Open Africa will take you on a life-enriching journey.
