When Nelson Mandela embarked on his Freedom tour across the world, he took an extensive trip to the United States of America (USA). He visited various states, including cities such as Boston, New York, Atlanta and Washington D.C.

Mandela met the then-president George Bush Snr and secured a good political relationship between South Africa and the USA. During his trip, countless journalists and photographers from the USA and South Africa accompanied Mandela as he journeyed through the country, taking photographs and interviewing him.
