Madiba’s Peaceful Talks With the Inkatha Freedom Party
ANC Leader Nelson Mandela meeting with Inkatha Freedom Party leader Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, ending bitter rivalry in the cause of black anti-apartheid unity.
Before the 1994 election campaign, the African National Congress (ANC) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) were locked in a bitter rivalry due to the clash of clans, as ANC members were predominantly isiXhosa and IFP members were isiZulu.
The rivalry led to politically-motivated killings and a deep divide within the black South African community. ANC leader Nelson Mandela opted for a peaceful end to the rivalry, meeting with IFP leader Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi to discuss the momentous changes that awaited the South African nation.
