On 11 February 1990, the day of Madiba’s release from prison, crowds gathered at the Victor Verster prison in Paarl to celebrate his freedom.
His wife, Winnie Mandela, was with him. Later that same day he addressed thousands of people from the balcony of the City Hall in Cape Town.
Magubane had taken a step-ladder (which is on the roof of the car) to capture Mandela making the speech from the balcony, but was unable to get close enough.
As they drove away, photojournalist Dr. Peter Magubane captured a moment where Winnie looks back at the camera, with a newspaper in the shot that reads “FREE!” This photograph is an iconic Peter Magubane shot, as he had the talent of capturing intimate moments in a chaotic situation.
