Nelson Mandela's First Passport

Nelson Mandela was issued his first passport eight days after his release from prison.

Although his second name, Rolihlahla, was spelt incorrectly on the document as ‘Rolilahla’ he used it to travel to various African countries that shared South Africa’s values in the liberation struggle, including Zimbabwe, Ethiopia and Zambia. (The name ‘Rolihlahla’ is an isiXhosa name and colloquially it means “troublemaker”.)

Mandela embarked on a worldwide tour of countries in Africa and beyond, such as the United States and Britain to discuss political and economic issues with world leaders. He also campaigned for the African National Congress and secured valuable financial backing.

“May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.” ~ Nelson Mandela
