Kenneth Kaunda is a former teacher who became a Zambian politician. He was a key activist in Zambia’s struggle for liberation from British rule.
Kaunda was the first president of an independant Zambia and was elected in 1964. He was in office for 27 years and was known for his passionate stance against apartheid.
When Mandela embarked on an African nation tour after his release in 1990, he visited the African National Congress (ANC) headquarters in Lusaka, Zambia and met with Kaunda.
He rejected Kaunda’s proposal that the ANC should look to better reforms in the government, rather than continue with their armed struggle. To this Madiba replied: “It is quite clear that the government is not yet prepared to meet us and you can't expect us, therefore, to make any concessions to the government.”
“I knew as well as I knew anything that the oppressor must be liberated just as surely as the oppressed.” ~ Nelson Mandela
