After the African National Congress (ANC) was unbanned on 2 Feb 1990, the party was free to hold rallies and events to campaign for their leader, Nelson Mandela, to become the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

The ANC was then in continuous talks with the National Party government and made significant progress in ensuring a peaceful transition between apartheid and democracy.

The first legal rally the ANC held was attended by distinguished members (from left) Thomas Nkobi, Oliver Tambo and Walter Sisulu. Nelson Mandela can be seen here, also with his fist raised in the struggle salute as a symbol of power in unity.
