Nelson Mandela celebrates the end of apartheid and the liberation of all races by casting his vote in South Africa’s first free election for all its citizens. Nineteen political parties participated and 22 million people voted.

Pictured is Mandela addressing the press after he cast his vote. The constituency-based system is used in South Africa, similar to countries like the United Kingdom.

South Africa is divided into voting areas called constituencies. Each political party chooses a candidate to represent it in a specific constituency. Only people in that constituency vote for the candidate of their choice.

The winning candidate goes to parliament as the representative for that constituency. Voters are registered to a particular voting district and needs to be over the age of 18.

“There is no such thing as part freedom.” ~ Nelson Mandela
