Throughout Mandela’s political career, he interacted with many students. He would visit schools, townships and city halls to address the youth of the country. In the late 1960’s, the youth took a stand against the oppressive apartheid regime and protested the Bantu Education Act which enforced Afrikaans to be the main language of study for all students.
The day of the Soweto student uprising is now known as Youth Day and is celebrated every year on June 16th. It commemorates the young lives lost to the brutal apartheid system and celebrates the power of the youth.
Madiba enjoyed interacting with the youth at events. He was a hugely inspirational figure that was respected by citizens of all ages in South Africa.
Whether Madiba signed an autograph or smiled thoughtfully, he made a profound impact on South African youth.
“Without education, your children can never really meet the challenges they will face. So it’s very important to give children education and explain that they should play a role for their country.” ~ Nelson Mandela
