Madiba and His Grandson Bambatha

Eye-to-eye contact between Madiba and his grandson Bambatha.

Madiba was a family man. He had six children, 17 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren and was very fond of all of them. Mandela’s daughter, Zindziswa Mandela-Hlongwane had a son named Bambatha, who was a baby when Madiba was released from prison.

Pictured here is the ‘father of the nation’ embracing his grandson, smiling happily at the little bundle, showing a softer, nurturing side of the iconic leader. Madiba was very fond of children and would often stop to interact with them at rallies and events.

Although the leader’s exterior was formal and dignified, he had a nurturing side that not many citizens saw, except through candid photographs.

Inspired by his love for children Mandela established the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund in 1995 and donated a third of his salary while he was president to the fund. In just two years over R36 million funded more than 780 projects.
