A serious-looking Nelson Mandela steps out of a car to a throng of supporters. He is holding a clenched fist in the air - the typical salute of the anti-apartheid struggle.
The raised fist is accompanied by shouts of ‘Amandla’ which means ‘power’ in the the Nguni languages.
'Amandla!' is usually used as part of a traditional call and response in which the other party responds with 'Ngawethu' (to the people). The slogan Amandla Ngawethu; Matla kea Rona expressed the demand for political power be transferred to the people of South Africa.
“You may succeed in delaying, but never in preventing the transition of South Africa to a democracy.” ~ Nelson Mandela
