Allan Boesak was a pastor and studied at various theological institutions around the world and obtained a PhD in ethics. In 1982 Boesak introduced a motion requesting that World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) declare apartheid a heresy.

The alliance adopted the Declaration on Racism and elected him chairman of the 50 million-member alliance. He was also instrumental in the formation of of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in 1983. This umbrella organisation became the main anti-apartheid group in South Africa.
