During the Convention for Democratic South Africa (CODESA) sittings in Durban in 1991, over 90 organisations gathered to discuss and work out the change of political leadership in South Africa.

A strike about the imposing of Value Added Tax, right-wing anger and political violence after the signing of the National Peace Accord lead to increased tensions in the country.

Against this background, F.W. de Klerk’s National Party and the ANC met in secret talks which paved the way for the multi-party negotiations in December 1991.
