Surrounded by bodyguards, Nelson Mandela visited a gathering of church goers at the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) near Pietersburg in Polokwane during his campaign in the early 1990’s.
Every year during Easter and in September millions of ZCC members visit the church’s headquarters at Zion City Moria near Polokwane in the Limpopo province. The church fuses the Christian faith with African beliefs and preaches a message of peace.
Pictured is Mandela giving the anti-apartheid struggle salute of a raised clenched fist. This salute is accompanied by the shout ‘Amandla’ (‘power’) which is echoed by the word ‘awethu’ (‘to the people’).
“If you want the cooperation of humans around you, you must make them feel they are important, and you do that by being genuine and humble.” ~ Nelson Mandela
