Nelson Mandela, Zindzi Mandela and Winnie Mandela at the grave site of Madiba’s mother at Qunu, a village in the former Transkei, now known as the Eastern Cape.
In 1968, Noqaphi Nosekeni, Mandela’s mother, passed away whilst he was in prison on Robben Island, and he had been denied the right to attend her funeral.
Now as seen in the image Madiba is on his way to his mother's grave to pay his respects.
Nelson, Winnie and Zindzi Mandela are seen washing their hands. In the Xhosa culture, hand washing at the graveside is done as a means of washing the death away and avoiding carrying it around.
“We must use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right.” ~ Nelson Mandela
