Walter Sisulu born on the 18th May 1912 was a lifelong friend, confidante and mentor to Nelson Mandela. It was Sisulu, as a key figure of the African National Congress (ANC) during the 1940’s who brought Nelson Mandela into the organisation.

They shared time in prison on Robben Island, where Water Sisulu was incarcerated for 25 years. Nelson Mandela served jail time on Robben Island from 1964 until 1982.

Walter Sisulu was released from Robben Island at the age of 77 in 1989. Sisulu continued to help shape South Africa into a free democratic nation until his death in 2003.

This image shows the closeness of Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela, at the African National Congress (ANC) Conference held in Durban, 1990.

This was the first ANC Conference held in South Africa since 1959. The ANC organization had been operating underground for 30 years.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” ~ Nelson Mandela
