Mandela was unfortunately in prison on Robben Island, when his mother, Noqaphi Nosekeni, passed away in 1968. Nelson Mandela was barred from attending his mother’s funeral, which added to his grief.

As the eldest son it was Mandela’s responsibility to bury his mother.

As seen in the image Madiba is on his way to his mother's grave, to pay his respects to the woman who he so dearly loved. Years later in 2011, Noqaphi Nosekeni was honoured by the restoration of the Methodist church that she had founded in the family’s home village, Qunu.

“There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you have altered.” ~ Nelson Mandela
