Nelson Mandela was the pioneer of a peaceful transition from apartheid to democracy during his presidency. As the leader of the African National Congress (ANC), he had the huge responsibility of ensuring that racial tensions did not lead to a civil war in South Africa.
He and other prominent South African leaders ensured that peace talks continued between the National Party and the ANC. Pictured is here is Mandela and Cyril Ramaphosa leaving a peace summit focused on reviving negotiations amidst spurts of violence in the country.
During those years, a young Cyril Ramaphosa had a close relationship with Madiba and has been a notable figure in the ANC since then. He started off as a trade unionist, later became a wealthy businessman and eventually became the president of South Africa in February 2018.
