Sarafina! is a South African musical that depicted the Soweto riots of 16 June 1976 and told the story of the students’ involvement in these riots. The riots were in protest of the apartheid and the Bantu Education Act, which forced black African students to be taught in Afrikaans.
Sarafina! was written by Mbongeni Ngema and debuted in 1988. In 1992, it was remade into a movie by the same name, which starred American actress Whoopi Goldberg.
The play took the stark reality of life under apartheid rule in South African and made it into a relatable, compassionate musical. In this image, Nelson Mandela meets an actor from the musical.
“Sometimes, it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.” ~ Nelson Mandela
