Conservative: 15 to 20 tonnes Average: 20 to 35 tonnes Good: 50 tonnes+ Greenhouse production can exceed 500 tonnes per hectare per year.

Harvesting

Harvesting of pickle and other processed cucumbers is done with mechanised harvesters. This is normally a once-over process at about 8 weeks after emergence. Harvesting of open field fresh cucumbers is done manually and with mechanised harvester platforms. Greenhouse harvesting is done by hand.

Harvesting of Cucumbers starts about 9 to 10 weeks after planting and continues for as long as the plant flowers and produces fruit. Cucumbers for the fresh market must be harvested twice a week at least.

The harvest can continue for two months. It is important to harvest ripe fruit immediately as leaving them on the vine inhibits the production of new flowers and more fruit. Cool picked fruit as soon as possible after picking.

Storage

Cucumbers are best picked, shipped, sold and consumed as quickly as possible. If stored or transported they should be kept at 10°C to 12°C with a relative humidity of over 90%. Under these conditions, cucumbers could keep their condition for up to 14 days.
