Harvesting

Harvesting is done when the average beetroot reaches about 7 centimetres in diameter. Earlier harvesting does take place if the market requests a smaller beet. Harvesting can be done by hand, but most large commercial operations harvest mechanically.

Storage

Beetroot should be cooled to between four and five degrees centigrade and a relative humidity of over 90 percent within as short a time after harvest as possible, normally within 6 hours of harvest.

But when climate temperatures are higher, then the cooling must take place quicker. the beetroot can be stored for up to six months at one to two degrees centigrade at a relative humidity of 90+ percent.

Pests

Red Spider, Aphids, Cut worm and Nematodes.

Diseases

Some common diseases are Cercospora Leaf Spot, Scab, Brown rust, Downey Mildew and Root rot.By Louise Brodie
