Well-wishers celebrate Nelson Mandela’s release from prison.

When Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990, many South Africans celebrated the homecoming of the country’s heroic political figure. Crowds of supporters held rallies and came together to celebrate Madiba’s freedom.

Supporters wore T-shirts in the African National Congress (ANC) colours of black, green and gold saying “Welcome home our leader” and words of encouragement for the ANC.

Madiba’s homecoming represented a future for many South Africans oppressed during the apartheid years and the hope that Mandela’s freedom would bring freedom to everyone in the country.

“No one truly knows a nation until he has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens but its lowest.” ~ Nelson Mandela
