“Free Mandela!”

During Mandela’s incarceration on Robben Island, many South African citizens called for his release, organising marches and rallies to protest his imprisonment. Large crowds from all over the country would protest in honour of Mandela and demand his release.

Students from the University of Cape Town also held silent protests for Madiba’s release. People of all races and cultures protested the apartheid regime and its brutal enforcement of racial segregation.

Pictured is a group of protesters, chanting “Free Mandela!” waving placards in the ANC colours with his face on it and raising their fists in the struggle salute. The raised fist was a symbol of power and unity during the struggle years.
