Nelson and Winnie greet the crowds gathered at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg to welcome him home.

After Nelson Mandela’s release from prison, he was warmly welcomed by supporters, his family and political affiliates.

Many events and rallies were held in his honour, which he usually attended with his wife, Winnie Mandela and other colleagues.

Pictured is a jubilant Mandela as he entered the Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg with his fist raised in the air as the struggle salute at a homecoming event. Such events always drew large crowds of supporters that came to celebrate their leader’s release from incarceration.

"It always seems impossible until it's done." ~ Nelson Mandela
