Madiba’s first phone call received after his release at his home in Orlando West, Soweto.

After Nelson Mandela was released from prison, he moved back to his home in Orlando West, Soweto with his wife, Winnie Mandela. They stayed there for just 11 days, before moving to a larger house in Houghton where he received guests, colleagues and friends throughout his campaign before the 1994 elections.

Pictured here is Madiba receiving his first phone call at home during a celebration meal. Mandela was always hard-working and never shied away from late night phone calls or early morning meetings.

“It is an achievement for a man to do his duty on Earth irrespective of the consequences.” ~ Nelson Mandela
