Nelson and Winnie Mandela share time at home together the third day after his release from prison

Three days after Nelson Mandela was released from Victor Verster Prison after 27 years in jail, he spent some much needed time with Winnie.

"Comrades and fellow South Africans, I greet you all in the name of peace, democracy and freedom for all," he told thousands of supporters, many getting their first look at the 71 year old Congress Leader.

Mandela first saw Winnie at a bus stop in Soweto, he wrote in his memoir. She was 22 and the nation’s first black female social worker. He was 18 years her senior, married with three children and a fixture in the struggle to end apartheid.

“I cannot say for certain if there is such a thing as love at first sight,” he wrote in his biography. “But I do know that the moment I first glimpsed Winnie Nomzamo, I knew that I wanted to have her as my wife.”

“Human beings have got the ability to adjust to anything.” ~ Nelson Mandela
