Mandela's Comrades

Tokyo Sexwale, Joe Slovo, Nelson Mandela and Cyril Ramaphosa in Soweto.

Throughout his career, Nelson Mandela had a close group of comrades that was part of the African National Congress (ANC) or otherwise politically inclined, that supported his cause and helped him transition South Africa from apartheid to democracy in the 1990’s.

Tokyo Sexwale was a political pioneer that was imprisoned on Robben Island alongside Mandela for this anti-apartheid activities.

Joe Slovo was a anti-apartheid lawyer and the leader of the South African Communist party who worked closely alongside Madiba to oppose the apartheid system.

Cyril Ramaphosa was a leading ANC figure and is currently the President of South Africa.
