Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma, was the fourth President of South Africa whowas inaugurated in 2009. He remained in office until early 2018.
Zuma also served as deputy President of South Africa from 1999 to 2005, under then-president Thabo Mbeki. During the Apartheid years, Zuma went into exile and was one of the first African National Congress leaders to return to South Africa in the 1990’s when negotiations between the then-government and the ANC started picking up.
Zuma’s Zulu heritage made his role in the ANC more important in diffusing tensions between the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and ANC members.
