Nelson Mandela was one of the defendants of the Treason Trial of 1956, where various political activists, including Ruth First, Joe Slovo and Joe Modise stood accused of treason along with anti-apartheid journalists and political affiliates.

Pictured are some of the accused, including Robert Resha, a journalist and member of the African National Congress Youth League, and Z.K Matthews, a black academic. They are entering the court where the trial took place in Johannesburg, smiling and waving at the police.

This was an innocent act of defiance that showcased the activists’ bravery in the face of oppression and injustice.

“I shall neither impose my own customs on others nor follow any practice which will offend my comrades.” ~ Nelson Mandela
