Nelson Mandela and Queen Elizabeth II in Cape Town.

In 1995 Queen Elizabeth II sailed to South Africa on the Royal Yacht Britannia. She was greeted by Nelson Mandela as she stepped off the yacht.

The Queen awarded Madiba the Order of Merit, for his remarkable achievement of the peaceful transition of South Africa from apartheid to democracy.

Madiba and the queen remained friends.
