Winnie Mandela born 26 September 1936 as Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela was an anti-apartheid activist, and a senior ANC figure. She married Nelson Mandela on 14 June 1958, they were married for 38 years, but for many of those years, Nelson was incarcerated.

Their marriage withstood their incarceration and all the ups and downs in between. Unfortunately, their marriage could not withstand freedom and in 1996 they were divorced.

Seen in this image are Nelson and Winnie Mandela having their first breakfast together following Madiba’s release from jail in 1990, at their home, No. 8115 Orlando West, Soweto.

“Gone forever are the days when harsh and wicked laws provide the oppressors with years of peace and quiet.” ~ Nelson Mandela
