Relax in the Wild - Activities
Amakhala Game Reserve, Eastern Cape

Twice daily drives into the Amakhala Reserve take you into the habitat of the Big 5.

Game Viewing

Guides from Carnarvon Dale Lodge do their utmost to show you a close up view of how the animals live, eat and survive.

For guests staying for two or more nights explorations into Shamwari Game Reserve can be made, extending your possibilities of some great wildlife encounters.

Amakhala Reserve is a conservation initiative to re-introduce game that wandered these hills and plains before farming was introduced by settlers. Specific cheetah and rhino conservation projects are in place, but generally, the entire reserve is testimony to the efforts of the programme.

In addition to the Big 5 expect to see many species of antelope such as kudu, red hartebeest, springbok and blesbok. You will have frequent sightings of the beautifully marked zebra & giraffe.

Bush Walks

Relaxing guided bird walks and game walks are are available as something different to game drives. Here the idea is to relax and unwind rather than to seek out the Big 5!.

Take some time to breath the clear air, listen to the sounds of the bush and smell the various aromas of the South African veld. A bush walk concentrates on the smaller creatures and bush signs that the larger game leave behind as tell tales of their visits to the area.

Bush Dining

Delicious meals in traditional South African style ensure that guests never go hungry! Get to know dishes such as Bobotie and Malva pudding, and don’t forget to ask the hosts about the origins of these. They are all linked to the fascinating history of the Cape and the settlers who moved here.

Here you will find good home cooking with a solid breakfast to fuel the day, a light lunch and a wonderful dinner to round off the South African experience. Catering for vegetarians and diabetics is available on request.
