Amakhala Reserve was formed by a collaboration between descendants of early settlers in a project to return perviously used farming land to its original state.
The gradual reintroduction of indigenous game and vegetation has led to the reserve becoming a highly respected conservation area, where guests can view the Big 5. Guests can also see many species of antelope, cheetah, zebra and giraffe as well as the smaller game not as well known. Serval and Caracal are two of the less often seen animals. You need to keep a lookout for these secretive animals!
Experienced guides will conduct the wildlife viewing safaris into the reserve in 4x4 safari vehicles. This means that you can get up close to the animals for fascinating viewing and great photo opportunities.
Delicious meals are served with an African flair in the dining room accompanied by a variety of South African wines. Guests are called to dinner by the summons of a blast from a Kudu horn. At times, you may be treated to traditional singing and dancing while enjoying your meal.
With snacks and drinks provided on game drives, in addition to cooked breakfasts, homemade bread and a choice of meals enjoyed in the dining room or fireside boma, one can say this is a dining experience equal to the wonders of the game viewing!
In addition to the daily game drive, Safari Lodge at Amakhala also offers game walks and river cruises. Massage and spa treatments can be booked either in the treatment room or at your private suite. A further aspect enabling a different exploration of nature is the stargazing platform with telescope providing night time viewing of the heavens.
