The Amakhala Reserve is home to a vast number of animal and bird species.
Guests usually wish to see the Big 5 and often are not aware of the smaller varieties, which are not as common as the 5 favourites but can provide as much fascination. Look for the Caracal, an elusive cat; the endangered brown hyena; the rare Cape Clawless Otter, which can be seen in the Bushman’s River.
Amakhala reserve is specifically involved in rhino and cheetah conservation. But, is also known for its protection and conservation of all game. Returning the area to the state in which free roaming animals lived before farming was introduced.
Meals are served in the main lodge – from the cold breakfast buffet and hot cooked breakfast, through the snacks of the day, high tea, up to the delicious three course evening meal. All is attentively prepared and presented. Experience traditional South African fireside braais (barbecues) a great way to taste dishes that many tourists may find unfamiliar but are sure to enjoy.
Horseback trails into the “non” Big 5 part of the Amakhala Reserve are suitable for experienced riders as well as those who have intermediate skill. This is an opportunity to examine plants, trees, flowers and animals from the small tortoise to the tall giraffe. Bird viewing is fascinating as the bird species are plentiful here. A boat ride on the Bushmans River is a great opportunity to see the prolific birdlife. Look for the Knysna Turacos, denham's bustards and an array of sunbirds.
