Madiba Receives an Honorary Doctorate from Wits

In 1991, Nelson Mandela received an Honorary Doctorate at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg for his commitment to the country and showcasing the strongest national leadership South Africa has ever seen.

Madiba was and is an inspiration for people around the world and his legacy of hope, perseverance and the fight for freedom motivated the university to honour him with the prestigious award.

Mandela has received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including an Honorary Doctorate of Law from the University of Lesotho, the Lenin Peace Prize for 1990, an Honorary Doctorate from Stellenbosch University and the Nobel Peace Prize 1993.
