There is nothing more exhilarating than feeling a gust of wind on your face as you do a frontal flip through the spray of the Atlantic wave you are riding, kite overhead and the sun shining brightly...that’s the adrenaline-filled beauty of kitesurfing.

Once you’ve got your kit sorted, you can head out to a few local spots for some great kitesurfing. As the country is known for its splendid waves and winds, you are spoilt with choice. Take a road trip up the east coast and experience the Garden Route’s fabulous beaches - Stillbay, Hermanus and Knysna are all great for catching a ride in the waves. It’s never as crowded as the Cape Town beaches, so you have plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the water.

In the Cape Town vicinity, the Scarborough and Kommetjie areas are quite popular, and Muizenberg beach makes for a splendid ride as well. The beaches at Bloubergstrand and Big Bay are internationally renowned kitesurfing spots, so you know it’s worthwhile. Langebaan is the best place for a beginner kitesurfer, so if you’re still finding your feet, head that way for a more relaxed ride.

Up Durban-side, there are numerous stretches of beach where kitesurfers can dive into the warm waters and enjoy a fast-paced ride. The KwaZulu-Natal coast is not really known for kitesurfing, but if you are in the area, head out and test the conditions - you never know what you might find.
