The Cape Winelands makes for a scenic drive. Once you have passed through the beautiful Cogmans Kloof road from Montagu, you are effectively back on the Cape Town side of the mountains. Rainfall increases and the soil is more flagrantly fertile.

Robertson and Ashton are therefore the centre of a busy agricultural district. Many of South Africa’s best-known food brands (like Koo and All Gold) had their start here, trading as humble farmer’s co-operatives. Now, most of these co-op’s have been bought out by stock-market money, and united under the über-brand of Tiger Foods. Nevertheless, much of the produce that goes into our tinned peaches, frozen peas and bottled bounty still comes from the surrounding countryside.

Robertson also has a clearly marked wine route, and it offers an interesting alternative to the more common grape-growing region around Stellenbosch. The Robertson area has a bird park, 4x4 trails, and numerous hikes. And then there is the Soekershof Maze and labyrinth, claiming to be the largest planted hedge maze in the world! Apparently, over 1500 species of succulents and cacti can be found on the Soekershof property.

Near to Robertson is Bonnievale, another pretty little town, well known for its luxuriant rose gardens that spill out onto the road and scenic wine farms. It is also the home of TimJan Wonder Juice, an all-natural remedy that promises to cure just about any ailment, from stomach problems to snoring. Amazing what you can do with a bit of aloe and a whole lot of alcohol.
