From small acorns grow big oak trees, and so did a small vegetable and fruit garden, established by Jan van Riebeeck in 1652, grow into…a country! Even more incredible is a saffron pear tree planted in those early settlement days that still bears fruit today.
The Garden has grown into one of the loveliest urban parks in the country, with a strong natural element of herbage. The Company’s Garden also accommodates the Iziko South African National Gallery, the Iziko South African Museum and Planetarium, various war and other memorials, and a restaurant. No longer accessible to the public, but probably where the garden started, are the Regency-style Houses of Parliament and the original home of the president, the Tuynhuis.
