The mission of the South African Rooibos Council is to promote, grow and protect the rooibos industry of South Africa for its stakeholders, locally and internationally.
The South African Rooibos Council also supports appropriate research and communication to promote the benefits of Rooibos. The council also has as its mandate the impetus to respond to threats and crises in the rooibos industry for its stakeholders and to protect the interest of consumers. The council also disseminates relevant information to enable consistent product quality and adequate supply.
In its role as representative of the South African Rooibos tea industry, an application brought to the European Union by the South African Rooibos Tea Council succeeded in securing geographic indication status for Rooibos Tea in 2016.
A geographical indication (GI) is a stamp of origin used on products which certifies that they are from a specific global geographical location. The use of a geographical indication, as an indication of the product's source provides an assurance of the traditional origin and qualities and reputation of a product.
The South African Rooibos Council provides funding for Rooibos tea research. An example of this was the funding of the identification and description of various Rooibos tea flavour attributes.
