On 22 June 1990, just months after his release after spending 27 years in jail, Nelson Mandela as leader of the African National Congress (ANC) addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.
In his speech he said: ‘It will forever remain an indelible blight on human history that the apartheid crime ever occured. It will forever an accusation and a challenge to all men and women of conscience that it took as long as it has before all of us stood up to stay enough is enough.’
“Significant progress is always possible if we ourselves try to plan every detail of our lives and actions.” ~ Nelson Mandela
