After his release from prison in February 1990, Nelson Mandela went on a Global Freedom Tour. Setting off in June 1990, this six week, 13 nation tour started in the United States of America.
His first call of port on the 20th June 1990, was New York, in recognition of the role New York City Government had played in opposing apartheid via racial discrimination laws and sanctions on South Africa.
Next Nelson Mandela was off to Boston; on June 23rd 1990, he spoke at the packed athletic building, at Madison Park High School. Afterwards at a ceremony at the John F. Kennedy library, Boston, Mandela received a commemorative Bust of John F. Kennedy which was presented by Senator Edward Kennedy, Jackie Onassis and Joe Kennedy were also present and are pictured above.
This was a momentous occasion and helped form an amicable relationship between the USA and South Africa.
