Discover the legend of Jock of the Bushveld (a classic South African story)
Jock of the Bushveld is a South African classic written in 1907 by Sir Percy Fitzpatrick. It recalls the tales of his adventures with his dog Jock, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross. Jock and his adventures in South Africa continue to capture the imagination of children (and adults) and this legend is brought to life at Fitzpatrick's Lodge at Jock.
The location of this child-friendly lodge in the Kruger Park is very close to where actual events in the story took place and it was the descendants of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick – the Niven family who built and continue to run it. It is a charming location to bring the family, not only with the story of dog but also because the lodge is one of the few places that has set up a programme of specialised kids safari activities in the Kruger Park. The rooms are specifically appointed for children and there are even childminding services on offer.
Families can soak up the African sun by their private pool or seek out the many adventures that await in the bush. Experienced tracker-guides with help locate wild game such as lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, elephant and even cheetah, if you are lucky! Besides game viewing in the private concession surrounding the lodge guests (namely moms and dads) can take full advantage of the The Relaxation Retreat which offers a steam room, sauna and hydrotherapy bath.
