From Garies the inland route follows the main street in the opposite direction, passing under the N7 and continuing up Studers Pass to Leliefontein (52k).
The Methodist mission dorpie of Leliesfontein, resplendent with its gaily painted church, hoves into view on a glorious mountain slope with godlike views towards the surrounding peaks. Head to Vera’s Kookskerm if you’re in search of some local boerekos.
From Leliefontein, a gravel road whips down the Kamiesberg Pass to Kamieskroon (31km). A final 25km drive into Namaqua National Park will get you to Skilpad Rest Camp.
The Namaqua National Park is well-known for its spring flowers, but this is not all it has to offer. The coastline, quiver trees, and a number of game species including springbok, steenbok, red hartebeest, gemsbok, chacma baboon and dassie make it worth a visit anytime of the year. It also offers a variety of activities such as hiking, mountain biking and a 4x4 route.
