Deep in the heart of Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, lies one of the oldest game reserves in Africa - Hluhluwe Game Reserve. Established in 1895, it has remained a game viewing paradise for decades now. With well-maintained paved roads that undulate up and down the verdant hills, it can enthral you whether you self-drive or opt for a guided game drive. Hluhluwe Game Reserve covers over 96 000 ha and has a wide variety of fauna and flora.
Hluhluwe is known for its white rhino conservation efforts and is home to the Big 5, where black and white rhino can be observed. It is also a great place to see the shy nyala. The terrain is hilly interspersed by open plains where you have a good chance of seeing cheetah.
The accommodation at Hluhluwe is as varied as the wildlife. You can choose from the luxurious ‘flagship’ Hilltop Resort, which is a multi award-winning resort, offering a lodge to self catering units. Alternatively, there is the more rustic bush lodges, a smaller camp experience for the self caterer.
Hluhluwe Game Reserve also has a range of activities other than game drives for you to pursue, including self guided foot trails, day walks, picnic sites, wilderness trails and weekend wilderness trails.
