The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park rates as one of South Africa’s top game-viewing destinations. A day drive along the hilly reserve roads is sure to take you past herds of buffalo, zebra and other game, while the massive Elephant Coast tuskers can hardly be missed. The elephants in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi are burly, brusque and in your face, so be ready to hit reverse gear if you do happen to bump into a bull in musth along one of the narrow gravel roads.
As far as predator sightings go, the KwaZulu-Natal parks punch way above their weight. Old hands insist this is the place to be for leopard sightings, and bumping into a pride of local tree-climbing lions is an encounter to relish. The park is divided into two sections, the northern Hluhluwe Park and southern Umfolozi Park, but you can visit both of these upon entry.
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (previously known as The Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve) was established in 1895, making it the oldest ratified game reserve in South Africa. Hluhluwe-iMfolozi offers world class bush accommodation options, situated on koppies with sweeping views across rolling hills, where you get to watch the animals in the distance.
