Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve is a natural paradise: think vast open spaces, rock formations that frame the horizon, sunsets that glow over the fynbos and veld spread over the earthy terrain.

Wildlife Viewing

Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve is home to many different animals, such as the Burchell's zebra and antelope species including Eland, Gemsbuck, Black Wildebeest, Blue Wildebeest, Bontebok, Springbok, Grey Rhebok, Duiker, Klipspringer and Steenbok.

Smaller animals include the Dassie (rock hyrax), Grey Mongoose, Rock Rabbit, Cape Hare and Striped Polecat. The larger animal residents include the Aardwolf, Antbear (Aardvark), Black-backed Jackal, Caracal and Cape Porcupine. The only large carnivore found in these parts is the elusive Leopard.

Hiking and Climbing

At Kagga Kamma there are three hiking routes - the 4 km Blue, 7 km Red and 9 km White routes. Avid climbers can enjoy challenging climbs on the short but quality crags. The current sport climbing grades range from grade 20 – 24. Please note, rock climbing is not a guided activity and guests must bring their own gear. Climbing permits are available upon enquiry.

4x4 Trails and Game Drives

You are invited to explore Kagga Kamma in your own off-road 4x4 vehicle. The trail offers 4x4 enthusiasts' views of the mountains as well as the local wildlife.

Birds and reptiles can be seen along the trails as well as some antelope species, so it is important to drive carefully. The route is more than 100 km long and can be quite difficult as it has some very steep sections. You can also opt for a guided game drive with ranger guides who point out interesting birds, animals and plants.

Mountain Biking

Mountain bikers can choose between the 10 km or 30 km route. Both the 10 km Red and the 30 km Black trails start from the main lodge, while the circular trails start at the reception area and wind through the surrounding nature. This route comprises mainly of a jeep track and winds through the various rock formations, with spectacular views across the fynbos plains.

Rock Art

The rock art paintings in the reserve date back over 6000 years. These ancient sites can be found all over the Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve along the self guided hiking and walking trails. Guests can opt to explore with the trained rangers, who can help you find the sites and provide you with some educational context to fully understand the San culture.
