But above all else, at the end of the day, sit on the beach and watch the sun go down, with the most magnificent mountain as your constant background companion. Nature lovers will find many walking trails among the dramatic coastal rocks and dunes along the coast. This is an experience that will be engraved in your memory for the rest of your life - and it will draw you back, time and again, to visit Cape Town.

A picturesque view of Table Mountain.

To photograph Table Mountain in all its glory, head up the R27 to Blouberg Beach. It's here that all the postcard photographs are taken and you get stunning views of the mountain across Table Bay - especially in the early evening. The original configuration of Table Bay, before the Foreshore and Duncan Dock were built, was the same shape as the outward spiral of most sea shells.

It's called logarithmic spiral and it follows a precise geometric progression. Waves bending around a rocky headland will carve out this shape, and its the same one you'll see all the way up the Cape Coast - Stil Bay, Mossel Bay, St Francis and the rest. The experience can be unpleasant when the wind blows, but nothing beats the beach for its view of Table Mountain and Robben Island and the miles of sand where you can stretch your legs. - By David Bristow
